Barcelona should explore return of 32-year-old following exit rumours

Thiago Alcantara could be the solution to Barcelona’s search for a new midfielder this summer, if a deal can be struck for the 32-year-old.

Xavi is keen on adding an experienced defensive midfielder to his squad following the departure of Sergio Busquets, and Oriol Romeu has been linked.

However, another former Barcelona star could be the ideal solution this summer. Liverpool midfielder Thiago could be on his way out of Anfield, following the signings of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, and the 32-year-old has just one year remaining on his contract.

Thiago left Barcelona 10 years ago to join Bayern Munich, where he enjoyed a remarkably successful career, before heading to Liverpool in 2020, and a return to the Blaugrana could help replace the experience of Busquets.

A recent report has claimed that Thiago has rejected an offer from Saudi Arabia, and whilst a deal may be difficult to do this summer, it remains to be seen whether he would be tempted by a move back to the club where he spent eight years in the academy.

Should Barcelona pursue Thiago?

The Spaniard could follow Ilkay Gundogan through the doors at the Camp Nou as an experienced winner joining an otherwise young team, and the departures of Busquets and Jordi Alba have meant that there is a need for proven leaders in the team.

However, his fitness record at Liverpool has been poor, and it remains to be seen what kind of finances are needed to persuade both the club and player to move this summer.

Although not strictly a defensive midfielder, Thiago could slot into the Busquets role as a deeper option than Gundogan and Pedri, and given that he ranks highly among European midfielders for tackles and interceptions, as well as progressive passes, he could be a perfect fit for Xavi’s side in terms of style.

Given his previous spell at the club, and his roots in La Masia, this could be a sensational homecoming for Thiago, and one which helps Barcelona progress in the Champions League next season.
