Barca are keen to add a defensive midfielder to their squad to replace club legend Sergio Busquets, despite the arrival of Ilkay Gundogan amidst severe financial issues But should Barcelona move for Dani Parejo or Oriol Romeu?
The situation around the finances means that Xavi will have to find a cheaper option in midfield this summer, and he is looking to replace the experience and leadership that Busquets used to provide.
Two names have been heavily linked with Barcelona in recent weeks in the form of Dani Parejo of Villarreal and Oriol Romeu of Girona.
Parejo, 34, has one year left on his contract at Villarreal, and could be available at a low cost. The Spain international has been instrumental for the Yellow Submarine, helping them win the Europa League and reach the Champions League semi-finals, and will arrive as a player well established in La Liga.
Romeu, 31, came through the La Masia academy, before forging a successful career for himself in the Premier League with Chelsea and Southampton.
The midfielder reportedly has a release clause of around £8.5m, and could represent a low-cost, experienced option.
How do Parejo and Romeu compare?
Romeu is three years younger than his Spanish counterpart and would be a more mobile and defensively strong option. He could cover the defence, which could allow the likes of Gundogan and Pedri to push further forward.
The Girona star ranks highly among European midfielders for blocks, interceptions and aerial duels, and he could be the perfect foil for the other midfielders to thrive.

However, what Parejo lacks in physicality, he makes up for with his technique. One of the best passers of a ball in Europe, the former Valencia captain ranks highly for his passing and progressive passing numbers, and he could slot into multiple midfield roles for the Blaugrana.
It remains to be seen whether Parejo would be keen on a move away from the Valencian region, and given Romeu’s history with the club, as well as his age, the Girona midfielder may be the better choice for Barcelona this summer.
