£17m teenager could solve Barcelona’s problem position

Barcelona have been linked with Real Valladolid defender Ivan Fresneda, as they aim to strengthen their options at fullback.

The 18-year-old attracted a lot of attention following his sensational breakthrough season despite Real Valladolid’s relegation, and he could reportedly be available for less than his estimated £17m release clause.

The Spanish right-back has been linked with a number of clubs including Arsenal and Newcastle, and it is currently unclear where his preference would be.

Barcelona are struggling financially, and need to make sales before they can consider spending further money on recruitment, but right-back is an area where they have struggled since the departure of Dani Alves.

Barcelona’s right-back struggles

A lot of defenders have come and gone, having failed to make an impact in the right full-back spot, and a long-term option could be very useful for Xavi.

The likes of Aleix Vidal, Emerson Royal, Hector Bellerin, and midfielder Sergi Roberto have failed in the position, and although Jules Kounde had a promising first season at the Camp Nou, it is rumoured that the Frenchman wants to return to his natural position at centre-back.

Although Ronald Araujo can also move to the right, a defender naturally equipped to play on the right could be useful, and Fresneda could fit this role.

The teenager stood out for his incredible strength in duels, as well as his comfort on the ball, and this could make him a perfect fit for Xavi’s side.

Having a natural right-back being able to advance forward could also help attackers such as Raphinha, by giving them extra support in build-up.

If it is possible for Barcelona to solve their financial issues enough that they can bring in a right-back, alongside their other targets, then Fresneda can arrive as the long-term and immediate solution.

Despite his young age, he has shown that he can succeed in La Liga, and if he settles well, Barcelona may not need to recruit in the position again for a long time.
