Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat is reportedly waiting for an offer from Barcelona, despite interest from elsewhere.

The 26-year-old was a standout player at the World Cup as Morocco reached the semi-finals, and has been strongly linked with a move to the Camp Nou.

A report from Mundo Deportivo has claimed that Barcelona are looking for a new defensive midfielder, with Girona star Oriol Romeu being eyed up, and Amrabat is an alternative.

Amrabat is keen on joining Xavi’s side, but it remains to be seen whether a deal can be done given the financial difficulties Barcelona are currently facing.

The midfielder helped Fiorentina reach the European Conference League final, and is set for a move away, with Manchester United also reportedly interested.

Should Barcelona move for Amrabat?

Given that Xavi is eyeing up a replacement for Sergio Busquets, Amrabat could be a solid option in the middle alongside Ilkay Gundogan and Pedri.

The Moroccan ranks highly among European midfielders for passing and progressive passes, and his performances in Qatar showed that he can help build a robust defence.

Although he does not have the same aerial presence as Busquets, if a deal can be done at the right price, then he represents a good option who could give Barcelona a few years of reliable squad depth.

However, whilst Amrabat may offer more on the ball, the primary target Romeu offers more physicality and ranks higher in defensive metrics.

Romeu may also be the cheaper deal, and given that he came through La Masia, the Girona midfielder may be the better option for Barcelona this summer.

The former Southampton star may be older than Amrabat, but all signs point towards Barcelona looking for a short-term option.

In two years’ time, Frenkie De Jong or Nico Gonzalez may be able to step into the role, and Romeu or Amrabat may not be needed in the long run.

If Man United enter the race, Barcelona may not be able to afford a bidding war, and Amrabat himself may have to give up on his dream of playing for the Blaugrana.
