Barcelona starlet Abde Ezzalzouli wants to stay at the club and fight for his place, despite transfer interest from Real Betis.

The 21-year-old was impressive as he spent last season on loan at Osasuna, scoring six and assisting twice in 34 games as Los Rojillos qualified for the Europa Conference League and reached the Copa Del Rey final.

However, there is uncertainty over his future at Barcelona. The winger faces stiff competition for a starting spot, but may fancy his chances at forcing his way into the side.

Journalist Santi Ovalle has now reported that Abde wants to remain at Barcelona, and that Xavi wants to keep him in the squad, whilst Real Betis are interested in his signature.

This perhaps indicates that both player and club will reject any transfer away, but it would be surprising if this was the case without Abde being given assurances that he will get an opportunity to prove himself, starting with the pre-season tour in the USA.

Should Barcelona keep Abde?

Barcelona’s left-wing options currently include Ousmane Dembele, Ansu Fati, Gavi and Ferran Torres, and unless there are departures across the attacking line, Abde may find it tough to break into the starting XI.

As a right-footed left-winger, Abde really caught the eye for his speed and ability on the ball. He ranks as one of the best dribbles and ball carriers amongst European wingers, and there may be a feeling that his output could significantly explode as he gains more experience.

This may give more credence to the argument that another season on loan could aid his development. Going to Betis, and playing regular football at a European club competing at the top end of La Liga, could prepare him well for a first-team spot at Barcelona next year.

However, given that Xavi clearly rates him highly, keeping him at the club and closely monitoring his progress could be the best move, but if he finds himself short of playing time, then this may have to be reconsidered in the January transfer window.
